British Muslims for Secular Democracy (BMSD) is concerned by US President Donald Trump’s announcement to recognise Jerusalem as the capital of Israel.
The majority of the international community does not recognise Jerusalem as the capital of Israel and considers it as part of the occupied territory. America’s recognition is tantamount to ignoring the global society of nations and blatant disregard for international law. Russia’s recent recognition of West Jerusalem as capital of Israel and East Jerusalem as the capital for a Palestinian state without the consultation and agreement of Palestinians is equally disturbing.
This announcement will undoubtedly have far reaching adverse consequences for the Middle East region as well as create unrest amongst many Muslim and non-Muslim communities alike across the world including in Britain.
The recognition of Jerusalem as the capital of Israel by the US has not been welcomed by the EU and other western and Muslim nations. We demand that it is met with stronger principled opposition from the British government.
We also urge Muslim communities both in Britain and abroad, to show restraint in response to this announcement and to follow democratic and civil means to register their protest in the wake of this announcement.
Dr Shaaz Mahboob of BMSD said “Given the high levels of volatility already present within the Middle East, the announcement by President Trump can not only scupper any prospects of a peace deal between Israel and Palestinians but can ignite the situation further harming the relations between many historic allied nations across the globe”.
